Orlando Woman Charged With DUI With Serious Bodily Injury After Crash Critically Injuring 2 Young Children In Frostproof Crash

32-year-old Ashauntie Cox (DOB 2/15/1991) of Orlando, who caused serious bodily harm to two children in her vehicle while fleeing from two crashes and driving under the influence, was arrested in Polk County on Friday, May 19, 2023, and charged with several felonies.

According to witnesses and information developed during the investigation, the first crash occurred around 8:00 p.m. on US Hwy 27 at the intersection with US Hwy 98 near Frostproof. Cox was driving a blue Kia southbound on Hwy 27 when she struck a grey Chevy Silverado pickup truck and then fled at a high rate of speed. As she continued to recklessly speed south down Hwy 27, weaving in and out of slower moving traffic, she rear-ended a 2016 Honda CRV while trying to pass between that SUV and the vehicle next to it which were both also going southbound. The victim driving the CRV was taken to Sebring Hospital, where he was treated and released with minor injuries.

The collision caused Cox’s vehicle to flip several times, ejecting two Orlando children, ages 5 and 8 years old. Both sustained significant injuries, and they were taken to Tampa General Hospital where they are both in critical condition. A 27-year-old female passenger was also seriously injured along her spinal cord, hip, and back. She remains at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center in stable condition.

When deputies arrived at the scene of the crash, they detected the odor of marijuana and located a bottle of tequila in Cox’s vehicle. Cox was transported to the hospital and interview by deputies. Cox told deputies they were driving from Orlando to Avon Park to celebrate the 5-year-old’s kindergarten graduation. She admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day, and to having four shots of tequila. Her blood was drawn for further analysis, and she displayed several signs of impairment.

She was booked into the Polk County Jail and is being charged with:

·        Three counts DUI with serious bodily injury (F3)

·        Two counts negligent child abuse with great bodily harm (F2)

·        Reckless driving (F3)

·        One count DUI with property damage (M1)

·        One count DUI (M2)

Further charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

“This woman had no regard for anyone’s life when she got behind the wheel intoxicated and then drove recklessly down a major highway, but what’s worse is the blatant disregard she had for the lives of the innocent children in her car. I expect a successful prosecution to hold her accountable—and let’s hope she loses her driving privileges if she’s released from jail or prison. Please keep these babies and their families in your prayers.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff

Lake Wales High School, Cleared After Heightened Security Due to Threats

On December 3, 2024, Lake Wales High School was notified of a threat to the school. The following is a post made on social media by LWHS at approximately 10 AM this morning:

There will be extra law-enforcement visible on campus for the remainder of the day. All students and staff are safe and we have resumed regular activities.”

Today, Lake Wales, is Small Business Saturday. They Need Us More Than Ever.

0

Today is November 30, 2024. Many of us spent yesterday hunting down deals at big box stores, drinking coffee from national chains, and eating our meals from franchise restaurants. Black Friday is a telling day for the economy, for retailers, and for families preparing for the holidays.

Today, it’s time to shop a little smaller.

When we patronize our small businesses, particularly those in Lake Wales (whether in the City or in an unincorporated area), we’re literally keeping many of those dollars right here. Many of our friends and neighbors are business owners. They provide products and services we need and enjoy. There’re hardworking, resilient, and invested.

Today, I’m heading to a small family business for family photos.

Today, go out and consider spending a few dollars down the street. Cupcakes. Earrings for your mom. An embroidered shirt. A PVC joint to fix the sink. An antique bowl. A book and a cup of joe. A bouquet of flowers. Fresh produce. Farm eggs. Brick oven pizza. Do some thrifting. So many possibilities.

There’s way more than this that can be found.

Take a few minutes today and look. It won’t take you much time and you don’t have to break the bank.

But every dollar, and every customer, will be appreciated.

Happy Small Business Saturday.

Belles Take the Big Easy

January 24 – February 9, 2025

Directed by Jamie Clark and Natasha Pinzas

The Lake Wales Little Theatre box office has tickets on sale now for “Belles Take the Big Easy,” the next production in this season’s series. The show is scheduled to run January 24 – February 9, 2025, at LWLT. The theater is located at 411 N. 3rd. St., Lake Wales.

‘Belles Take the Big Easy” is a full length comedy by Alicia Lane Dutton and produced by Rebel Belle Publishing. Five women travel from Alabama to New Orleans to strike Mardi Gras off their bucket list.

At a flamboyant designer’s French Quarter boutique, the ladies film an episode of Celeste’s new web series, “Say Yes to Anything but A Wedding Dress.” Out of Flovilla, Alabama, and now out of control, Regina is ready to cut loose at the slightest opportunity, including getting the go signal at the crosswalk. Uptight Catherine has a new lease on life after her ex-husband drops a bomb shell which has her and the other ladies celebrating with more than coffee and beignets at Café du Monde.

At the famed Bacchus Mardi Gras Ball, a fortune teller delivers some disturbing news which sets the ladies on a journey with Marie the Merry Maid, who Celeste believes is VooDoo Queen Marie Laveau reincarnated. After a stop at The Old Absinthe House, the six ladies make their way through the French Quarter and the St. Louis Cemetery to collect the items needed to ward off a perceived curse.

With additional adventures on The Cajun Critters Swamp Tour, and at a day spa with a python massage on the menu,  the ladies take The Big Easy as only they can.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $14 for those under 18; they are available now by visiting www.lwlt.org.
