Orlando Woman Charged With DUI With Serious Bodily Injury After Crash Critically Injuring 2 Young Children In Frostproof Crash

32-year-old Ashauntie Cox (DOB 2/15/1991) of Orlando, who caused serious bodily harm to two children in her vehicle while fleeing from two crashes and driving under the influence, was arrested in Polk County on Friday, May 19, 2023, and charged with several felonies.

According to witnesses and information developed during the investigation, the first crash occurred around 8:00 p.m. on US Hwy 27 at the intersection with US Hwy 98 near Frostproof. Cox was driving a blue Kia southbound on Hwy 27 when she struck a grey Chevy Silverado pickup truck and then fled at a high rate of speed. As she continued to recklessly speed south down Hwy 27, weaving in and out of slower moving traffic, she rear-ended a 2016 Honda CRV while trying to pass between that SUV and the vehicle next to it which were both also going southbound. The victim driving the CRV was taken to Sebring Hospital, where he was treated and released with minor injuries.

The collision caused Cox’s vehicle to flip several times, ejecting two Orlando children, ages 5 and 8 years old. Both sustained significant injuries, and they were taken to Tampa General Hospital where they are both in critical condition. A 27-year-old female passenger was also seriously injured along her spinal cord, hip, and back. She remains at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center in stable condition.

When deputies arrived at the scene of the crash, they detected the odor of marijuana and located a bottle of tequila in Cox’s vehicle. Cox was transported to the hospital and interview by deputies. Cox told deputies they were driving from Orlando to Avon Park to celebrate the 5-year-old’s kindergarten graduation. She admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day, and to having four shots of tequila. Her blood was drawn for further analysis, and she displayed several signs of impairment.

She was booked into the Polk County Jail and is being charged with:

·        Three counts DUI with serious bodily injury (F3)

·        Two counts negligent child abuse with great bodily harm (F2)

·        Reckless driving (F3)

·        One count DUI with property damage (M1)

·        One count DUI (M2)

Further charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

“This woman had no regard for anyone’s life when she got behind the wheel intoxicated and then drove recklessly down a major highway, but what’s worse is the blatant disregard she had for the lives of the innocent children in her car. I expect a successful prosecution to hold her accountable—and let’s hope she loses her driving privileges if she’s released from jail or prison. Please keep these babies and their families in your prayers.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff

Four People Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash in Unincorporated Lake Wales

0

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Investigations Unit is investigating a multi-vehicle crash that occurred on SR 60 East near the intersection with Capps Road in Lake Wales around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

The vehicles and occupants involved were:

2012 Chevrolet Equinox – all four people inside this vehicle died

2020 Chevrolet Malibu – the driver of this vehicle was trauma-alerted via ambulance from the scene with significant injuries; he had no passengers

2005 Toyota Tacoma – the driver of this vehicle was trauma-alerted via helicopter from the scene with significant injuries; he had no passengers

2018 Toyota Corolla – the driver of this vehicle had minor injuries and she was taken to a local hospital; the four children in her car were minimally injured and transported to a local hospital as a precaution

2025 Ford F-150 – this driver was minimally injured and treated by PCFR at the scene; he had no passengers

All of the drivers are adults.

According to the investigation so far, which includes physical evidence, witness statements, and video from the area, it appears that the Equinox and Malibu were heading westbound on SR 60, each in its own lane. The Equinox attempted to move into the lane that the Malibu occupied, clipping the right front of the Malibu with its rear left corner, causing the Equinox to rotate and cross the center median and then into the eastbound lanes and into the path of the Tacoma. The Tacoma struck the Equinox on its passenger side, causing significant intrusion into the car and killing all four occupants.

The Tacoma then rotated and was hit by the Corolla, and then went into the path of the F-150.

The impact of the two vehicles in the westbound lane also caused the Malibu to enter into the median and then become airborne and flip multiple times. It came to a rest in the eastbound lanes – it was not hit by any other vehicles.

None of the deceased are from Polk County and deputies are still working to locate and notify their next of kin. The investigation is ongoing.

With its neon glow, checkerboard floors, and retro charm, Vibin’ Vinny’s is ready to twist, shout, and celebrate a major boost: a $50,000 grant from the City of Lake Wales.

At its meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 13, the Lake Wales Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Board awarded the downtown diner a $50,000 Food Services Grant.

Originally approved by the CRA Board in July 2025, the grant provides up to $50,000 in dollar-for-dollar matching funds to support improvements at local eateries.

According to Assistant CRA Director Ronni Wood, Vibin’ Vinny’s documented more than $131,000 in eligible upgrades, fully qualifying for the maximum reimbursement.

Formerly known as The Pink Flamingo & Fifties Diner, Vibin’ Vinny’s leans into its mid-century theme with “classic bites and Midwest charm,” serving burgers, Midwest flavors, and scoops of Hershey’s Ice Cream.

Owners Gene and Lynette Hofferber recently relocated the restaurant to a larger space at 230 East Park Avenue inside the Park Avenue Rhodesbilt Arcade.

Since reopening in December 2025, the diner has earned enthusiastic praise online.

“Absolutely the best burgers in town,” one Facebook reviewer wrote.

“Absolutely the best burgers in town,” one Facebook reviewer wrote. “Highly recommend grabbing a bite here! And guess what?! They also have an ice cream parlor next door!”

“We absolutely love coming here,” another reviewer wrote. “Food and shakes are delicious! Also nice to have a new food spot open downtown after five.”

At the meeting, Wood noted that the owners completed their required renovations within six months and invested nearly a quarter-million dollars into the space, an impressive commitment for a footprint just over 1,300 square feet.

Deputy Mayor Robin Gibson said he and other commissioners have visited the diner and were impressed by both the food and the experience.

“It is magnificent,” Gibson said. “It’s a destination for people to come from elsewhere—and to the arcade, of all places.”

Sheriff Grady Judd said the crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m. during a period of heavy traffic when vehicles were traveling both eastbound and westbound along the highway.

“For reasons unknown at this early stage of the investigation, one vehicle crossed over the median into the path of other vehicles,” Judd said

“For reasons unknown at this early stage of the investigation, one vehicle crossed over the median into the path of other vehicles,” Judd said during an on scene press conference. “When that occurred, there was a horrible crash.”

A total of eleven people were involved in the collision, which included five vehicles. Four of the eleven occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. All four fatalities were occupants of the same vehicle, Judd said.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office homicide unit responded to the scene and will remain throughout the evening as the investigation continues. Judd emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages and that the cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

Highway 60 east of Lake Wales has been completely shut down for several hours as investigators process the scene and cleared the roadway. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

“Our hearts break for all of those involved,” Judd said. “We ask for prayers for the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this tragic event.”

No additional details were released Wednesday evening. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Big Project, Lower Price: Lake Wales Reviews Just Over $600K Cemetery Expansion

Lake Wales Memorial Gardens

Expansion may soon be underway for Lake Wales Memorial Gardens Cemetery if a construction contract is approved by city commissioners.

At their workshop session on Wed. Jan. 28, the Lake Wales City Commission reviewed an agenda item regarding the expansion of the Lake Wales Cemetery.

A construction contract for the second phase of expansion is being considered for Tiger Contracting, LLC, for $609,428.73.

In Jan. 2007, the City purchased approximately 50 acres of land at Hunt Brothers and Lake Bella Road. Of that acreage, 20 acres were designated for Lake Wales Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

“The first five (5) acres of the site were designed and constructed and became available for internments in 2015,” wrote Nancy C Hernandez, Public Works Operations Manager.

“As burial capacity within Phase 1 continues to be reduced, staff initiated the next phase of expansion to ensure the City remains prepared to meet future interment needs,” she continued.

The City had received six bids for the second phase of construction. Of those six, Tiger Contracting, LLC was selected, as its bid was “the lowest responsive and responsible,” Hernandez wrote.

At the work session, Hernandez said that the bid was considered favorable as it was submitted by a local company and it had low overhead and low mobilization.

“So, all of those things just came together, which, as a result, gave us better pricing,” she said.

Deputy Mayor Robin Gibson commended the bid as a “dramatic example” of the “strength of competitive bidding.” He was especially impressed by how the bid was about “50 percent of what was estimated.”

This agenda item will be voted upon at the next regular city commission meeting, scheduled for Tues. Feb. 29 at 6 PM at Lake Wales City Hall.

Warning Period Begins as Second Round of School Zone Speed Cameras in Lake Wales Go Live

On February 4, 2026, the second phase of school zone speed cameras went live, according to Lake Wales Police Department.

Speed cameras are now in place on Burns Avenue, on both the eastbound and westbound lanes, covering Lake Wales High School, Victory Ridge Academy, and Spook Hill Elementary.

Cameras are already live on Highway 60 in front of Hillcrest Elementary, where they remain in a cycle of issuing warnings until February 27. At that time, citations will begin being issued to violators. Citations will come with $100 fine.

The Burns Avenue cameras are live in the school zone, where the speed limit is 15 mph, from 6:50 AM to 8:10 AM, and again from 2:45 to 3:45 PM, with the exception of early release days. Cameras will, however, remain live throughout the school day; they will follow the restrictions for the normal posted speed limit during the middle part of the school day.

After the 30-school day warning period, citations will begin being sent by mail.

Lake Wales Advances Utility Acquisition Involving Waverly Water and Crooked Lake Park Water

By James Coulter & Carl Fish

Back on December 16, 2025, the Lake Wales City Commission unanimously approved the purchase of the Waverly water and wastewater systems and the Crooked Lake Park wastewater system from Polk County, a move city leaders described as a major step forward for long-term planning, system reliability, and customer rates.

The decision followed discussion at the City Commission’s December 10 workshop, where commissioners reviewed the proposed transfer and its potential benefits to both the city and existing utility customers.

The approved transaction includes the purchase of the Waverly water and wastewater systems for $5.3 million, as well as the transfer of the Crooked Lake Park wastewater system following county-funded repairs needed to bring the system into compliance with state requirements. The agreement also includes installation of a water main intended to connect the Crooked Lake system into the City of Lake Wales’ existing utility network.

Former Crooked Lake Water – Will now be City of Lake Wales

City Manager James Slaton told commissioners that negotiations with Polk County had been ongoing for several years, with the county ultimately proposing the transfer of ownership of the systems to the city. He noted that the Polk County Commission approved the related items earlier on December 16, clearing the way for Lake Wales to take formal action that evening. While the resolution was approved in December, Slaton said the formal closing is expected to take place in March.

During the December 10 workshop, Attorney Tom Cloud of GrayRobinson told commissioners the acquisition “logically serves” Lake Wales by improving system reliability, lowering customer rates, and allowing for faster response times by bringing the utilities under direct city control.

Finance Director Dorothy Abbott also addressed questions regarding existing Waverly and Crooked Lake customers, confirming that those customers are expected to see lower utility rates once the systems are fully integrated. Abbott described the transaction as beneficial to both the city and its new utility customers.

Commissioners echoed those sentiments during the December 16 meeting.

Mayor Jack Hilligoss called the utility acquisition “an exciting development” for the city.

Commissioner Keith Thompson described the transfer as “an enormous step” and “a master stroke” for Lake Wales’ long-term planning and water resource management. He praised city staff for their work in bringing the agreement forward and emphasized how annexation and city jurisdiction allow for more strategic growth decisions.

“My plea to those who are always anti-annexation — you may not like the housing, but it benefits us that we have actual jurisdiction over the property and what goes on there,” Thompson said during the earlier workshop discussion. “Every time we annex a piece of property, we are trying to be strategic in the growth of Lake Wales.”

Deputy Mayor Robin Gibson also praised the agreement during the December 16 meeting, describing it as one of the most creative and effective actions undertaken by the city during his tenure. He acknowledged the time and effort required to bring the unified transaction to fruition.

Commissioner Carol Gillespie characterized the acquisition as a “win-win” for Lake Wales and its residents, referencing information reviewed at the workshop and confirming during the December 16 meeting that issues identified in the work session had been resolved prior to the vote.

Following the close of the public hearing, the City Commission voted 4-0 to adopt Resolution 2025-30, approving the purchase and related interlocal agreements with Polk County and authorizing the mayor, city staff, and special counsel to take all steps necessary to close the transactions. These should all be completed before the end of March 2026.

Lake Wales Physician Arrested on 12 Battery Charges Following Workplace Allegations

0

A Lake Wales physician was arrested in late January following an investigation into multiple alleged incidents involving unwanted physical contact with an employee, according to arrest and probable cause affidavits released by the Lake Wales Police Department.

Ricardo James Navarro, 38, of Babson Park, was taken into custody on January 28, 2026, and charged with 12 counts of misdemeanor battery under Florida law.

According to the affidavit, an employee at Navarro’s medical office reported a pattern of inappropriate and non-consensual contact that allegedly occurred over approximately one year.

The employee told investigators the first incident occurred in January 2025 following a work-related meeting. She stated Navarro repeatedly brushed against her shoulder and made comments that made her uncomfortable. As employees were leaving the office later that day, she alleged Navarro kissed her on the right side of her face. She stated the contact made her uncomfortable but she did not report the incident at that time.

The affidavit states that on February 24, 2025, Navarro sent the employee a text message asking her to come to his office. She reported that upon entering, Navarro closed the door behind her and, after discussing patient information, leaned toward her and kissed her on the lips without consent. She stated she immediately told Navarro she needed to leave and exited the office.

Investigators documented additional incidents in which the employee stated Navarro summoned her to his office for work-related matters. She alleged that during those encounters, Navarro closed the door, grabbed her arm, and attempted to pull her onto his lap. She reported resisting by squatting rather than fully sitting and stated she did not know how long Navarro held her in that position but recalled her legs becoming tired. She told investigators the contact was unwanted.

The affidavit further states Navarro made her sit on his lap approximately 10 to 15 additional times over the course of the following year under similar circumstances. During that same period, she reported Navarro attempted to kiss her approximately 30 to 40 times, which she stated she avoided by consistently turning her face away. She told investigators each incident occurred inside Navarro’s office and that the contact was unwanted.

One incident described in the report allegedly occurred in early January 2026 after Navarro asked the employee to obtain an X-ray for a patient. When she entered the room, Navarro followed her inside, closed the door, grabbed her arm, and forcibly placed her hand on the front of his pants, where she stated she felt his penis. She advised detectives she immediately pulled her arm away, at which point Navarro grabbed her arm again and told her to “just touch it.” She stated she again told Navarro to stop and not touch her.

The employee told investigators she did not report the incidents earlier due to fear of losing her job, which she stated was her sole source of income, and because she is a single mother.

She reported that she did not return to work following another alleged incident that occurred on January 20, 2026, and decided to report the matter to law enforcement.

Officers noted in the affidavit that during her interview, the employee was visibly shaking, crying, and appeared fearful and emotionally distressed while recounting the alleged incidents.

With assistance from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, officers located Navarro at a residence in Babson Park. He was read his Miranda rights and declined to make a statement, stating he did not wish to speak with law enforcement without an attorney present.

Navarro was transported to the Polk County Processing Center and booked on 12 counts of misdemeanor battery under Florida Statute 784.03.

This is an ongoing investigation according to Lake Wales Police Department. If anyone has information regarding this investigation they can contact Phone: 863-678-4223.

Navarro is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Culpepper Cardiac Foundation Donates 84th AED to Indian River Airboat and Conservation Association

0

The Indian River Airboat and Conservation Association is now equipped with a life-saving Automated External Defibrillator (AED), thanks to the Culpepper Cardiac Foundation (CCF) and a network of long-standing community connections rooted in Florida’s airboating community.

Chris Worthen, president of the Indian River Airboat and Conservation Association, has served in that role for five years and is a lifelong resident of Indian River County. Worthen began airboating at the age of 16 and has been involved with the association—founded more than 30 years ago—for many years. The club’s mission is to preserve Florida’s wetlands while promoting safe and responsible airboating.

During the association’s Unity Weekend in Okeechobee, Worthen delivered the club’s annual report, emphasizing the importance of member safety. He shared that the club had begun CPR training but was still in need of an AED to have available at club events and on the water.

That message reached the right ears.

Brad Weihrauch, Vice President of the Florida Airboat Association and a 20-year member, heard the need during the Florida Airboat Association meeting. Weihrauch, who has also been involved with the Kissimmee River Valley Sportsman Association for decades, immediately reached out to Culpepper Cardiac Foundation to see if assistance was possible.

Worthen had personally experienced how critical immediate cardiac care can be. He had recently survived two heart attacks in two days and required a stent in his widowmaker artery. Additionally, the Indian River Airboat Association had dealt with a life-threatening emergency involving a member on the lake, further reinforcing the urgency of having an AED readily available.

While the process took time—approximately six months—the request never stalled. Communication between Weihrauch, Worthen, and Culpepper Cardiac Foundation began moving forward, fueled by shared connections and a long history of community collaboration.

Those connections trace back years, including a fundraiser held at The Apple Lounge & Grill to honor the late Toby Pope, also known as “Skeeter Eater.” The fundraiser, made possible by Tim Leopard and supported by Jay Pope, Niki Pope Fernandez, and friends from across the state, helped raise funds to build the Pope Pavilion on Lake Hatchineha in Haines City. Mutual friends, including Sara Michaels, played key roles in connecting people who would later work together again for this AED donation.

On Tuesday, January 20, Melanie Culpepper traveled more than two hours to Marsh Landing Restaurant to officially present AED #84 to the Indian River Airboat and Conservation Association. She was joined by her husband Brian, along with Brad Weihrauch, his wife Danamarie, Worthen and his wife, and several association members.

During the presentation, Worthen introduced Culpepper to the club members, who listened as she shared the story behind Culpepper Cardiac Foundation and the importance of heart awareness and rapid response in emergencies. Weihrauch also spoke, reflecting on how long-standing relationships and shared experiences led to this moment.

“Big thanks to the Culpepper Cardiac Foundation, Melanie, Brian and Brad Weihrauch for making this happen,” Worthen said. This AED will help protect the members and could save a life. He added, “I look forward to working with this group in the future.”

With the addition of the AED, the Indian River Airboat and Conservation Association is better prepared to keep its members safe while continuing its mission of preserving Florida’s wetlands and airboating heritage.
