Orlando Woman Charged With DUI With Serious Bodily Injury After Crash Critically Injuring 2 Young Children In Frostproof Crash

32-year-old Ashauntie Cox (DOB 2/15/1991) of Orlando, who caused serious bodily harm to two children in her vehicle while fleeing from two crashes and driving under the influence, was arrested in Polk County on Friday, May 19, 2023, and charged with several felonies.

According to witnesses and information developed during the investigation, the first crash occurred around 8:00 p.m. on US Hwy 27 at the intersection with US Hwy 98 near Frostproof. Cox was driving a blue Kia southbound on Hwy 27 when she struck a grey Chevy Silverado pickup truck and then fled at a high rate of speed. As she continued to recklessly speed south down Hwy 27, weaving in and out of slower moving traffic, she rear-ended a 2016 Honda CRV while trying to pass between that SUV and the vehicle next to it which were both also going southbound. The victim driving the CRV was taken to Sebring Hospital, where he was treated and released with minor injuries.

The collision caused Cox’s vehicle to flip several times, ejecting two Orlando children, ages 5 and 8 years old. Both sustained significant injuries, and they were taken to Tampa General Hospital where they are both in critical condition. A 27-year-old female passenger was also seriously injured along her spinal cord, hip, and back. She remains at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center in stable condition.

When deputies arrived at the scene of the crash, they detected the odor of marijuana and located a bottle of tequila in Cox’s vehicle. Cox was transported to the hospital and interview by deputies. Cox told deputies they were driving from Orlando to Avon Park to celebrate the 5-year-old’s kindergarten graduation. She admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day, and to having four shots of tequila. Her blood was drawn for further analysis, and she displayed several signs of impairment.

She was booked into the Polk County Jail and is being charged with:

·        Three counts DUI with serious bodily injury (F3)

·        Two counts negligent child abuse with great bodily harm (F2)

·        Reckless driving (F3)

·        One count DUI with property damage (M1)

·        One count DUI (M2)

Further charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

“This woman had no regard for anyone’s life when she got behind the wheel intoxicated and then drove recklessly down a major highway, but what’s worse is the blatant disregard she had for the lives of the innocent children in her car. I expect a successful prosecution to hold her accountable—and let’s hope she loses her driving privileges if she’s released from jail or prison. Please keep these babies and their families in your prayers.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff

Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, 13, Becomes Honorary Deputy Sheriff with PCSO; Sheriff Grady Judd Swears Him In During DJ’s Quest for a World Record

0

During a Joint Address to Congress on March 4 of this year, President Donald J. Trump introduced many of us to Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, 13, of Houston, Texas. DJ, a brain cancer survivor, who always wanted to grow up to pursue a career in law enforcement, is in Polk County today on a quest, one that Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd was happy to oblige.

This morning, on Friday, March 28, 2025, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office hosted a ceremony at the PCSO Sheriff’s Operations Center in Winter Haven, swearing the young man in as an honorary deputy sheriff for the agency.

DJ was recently sworn in as an honorary Secret Service agent in Washington D.C.

Recent news stories have been published about this young man who is suffering from incurable brain cancer. Polk County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, Carrie Horstman, says, “He has a goal of being sworn in at 1000 police agencies across the nation to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records.”

Horstman says DJ’s count is currently at around 913, leaving him with about 86 additional swearing-in ceremonies after today to make it to his goal.

His dad, Theodis Daniel, drove him to Florida and arrived in Polk County on Thursday from Texas for the occasion. After a couple of flat tires, the father, son, and other family members arrived at the operation center for the ceremony. It doesn’t seem like much will hold this family back from getting where they need to go.

DJ and his family were welcomed by the media and other attendees with a fanfare of applause. Despite having terminal brain cancer, he is a gregarious and feisty young man, spending several minutes in banter with Judd, swapping one-liners, and took the time to ask the Sheriff a few important questions.

Sheriff Judd gave attendees a glimpse of the Secret Service badge DJ received and spoke on his good character.

“They made him…The Department of Homeland Security Secret Service Honorary Special Agent…that’s pretty awesome, right?”

“How’d you get that?” DJ said playfully, with humor beyond his short number of years.

“But now, we’re going to make you an honorary Polk County deputy sheriff. Is that pretty cool?”

‘Yes, sir,” DJ responds with a straight face. “As soon as I get sworn in , when do I get paid?”

Sheriff Judd administered the oath of service to his new honorary recruit, clad in an official PCSO uniform. normally, his father pins a new badge on his son, but DJ requested that his cousin, Laquita Beal, of Plant City, have the honor today, a move that she later said moved her greatly.

“I was so shocked. It was an honor, I lost the strength in my hands; I was shaking. But this is how he is, he just really free-spirited, very funny.”

DJ was given a commemorative plaque, a Jeepin’ with Judd bobble head, and, naturally, an official PCSO issued cowboy hat. He is also making memories, and demonstrating that when life hands you challenges, there are different ways of handling them.

DJ’s dad may have said it best:

“This whole journey is worth it. Who ever heard about a kid with terminal brain cancer that’s able to go out and share his stories with the world?”

‘He’s living his life, his best life. Like 1999 Prince.”

At approximately 7:47 a.m., a 12-year-old was in the crosswalk on State Road 60 at the intersection of 3rdStreet when he was struck by a 2010 Buick Enclave. Video footage shows the child waited at the crosswalk then began crossing once east and westbound traffic stopped at the light. The driver of the Buick, Ethan Havlock of Lake Wales was traveling east on State Road 60 and ran the red light. The car was traveling at an estimated speed of 47 miles per hour when impact occurred.

Havlock did stop and was on scene when police arrived. As a result of the crash, the child was flown to an area trauma center for immediate treatment. An active investigation is underway to gather more information about this incident.

This crash highlights the importance of paying attention while operating a vehicle and always obeying traffic control devices and signals. Coincidentally, today at 2:00 pm, proposals for red light and school zone speed enforcement cameras will be opened as the Lake Wales moves forward with implementing these programs within the city.

Giant Butterfly “Lands” in Lake Wales Pollinator Garden

Credit: City of Lake Wales

CITY OF LAKE WALES – A unique butterfly has landed in the pollinator garden across from the library. This rather large insect did not fly here but rode on a flatbed trailer from Tellico Plains, Tennessee to Lake Wales. This beautiful sculpture topiary was created by an accomplished artist named Joe Kyte, also known as Topiary Joe. Topiary Joe has been creating this kind of artwork since the early 1990s. His resume boasts an impressive client list such as Disney and Cypress Gardens and also famous hotels, resorts and museums.

Stephanie Lutton, director of parks and recreation was inspired by sculptures she experienced at a Disney World park. “I saw gorgeous topiary butterfly sculptures at Disney’s Epcot Flower and Garden Festival,” she explained. Lutton found Topiary Joe through a Google search inquiring about Disney topiary artists. Lutton is working to secure seven more pieces of public art for the 9 concrete pads that were installed as a feature of the pollinator garden park. The first sculpture, the kinetic sculpture donated by Robin and Jean Gibson, was recently placed at the other end of the park.

City horticulturist Kevin Polk and his crew placed the sculpture on the pad at the Park Avenue end of the park. Polk is in the planning stages for the topiary. Now that the artwork has been delivered, he can order the moss and plants that fill the structure. The foliage will be watered with tubing irrigation placed inside the topiary. He is planning on using low-maintenance plants, such as creeping fig. The topiary growth will unfold over the next few months.

Lake Wales Police Seeking Public’s Help In Catching Possible Hate Crime Suspects

0
An image of a Toyota Prius, released by the Lake Wales Police Department, recorded near the scene of the incident.

The Lake Wales Daily is referring to this case as a possible hate crime. Law enforcement has not classified it as such at this time. However, the targeted business is minority-owned, and the weapon used—a Molotov cocktail—is not a typical choice for vandalism. The haphazard way the paint was sprayed on the business’s window (“Civil War” in large letters, with “Trump” in tiny letters at the end) raises questions about intent. We will continue investigating this story.Carl

The Lake Wales Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance identifying the suspect(s) responsible for vandalizing the Univista Insurance business located in Lake Wales in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 20th.

The suspect(s)threw bottles with flammable liquid, commonly referred to as Molotov cocktails through the front lobby glass and spray painted “Civil War Trump” on the front windows of the business. The fire caused damage to the interior of the business but it was not extensive.

A light colored Toyota Prius may have been involved in this incident.

Heartland Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of $2,500.00 for information leading to an arrest in this case.

This remains an active investigation. If you have any information regarding this crime, please contact Lake Wales Police at 863-678-4223. If you would like to remain anonymous and be eligible for a CASH REWARD through Heartland Crime Stoppers, you can call 1-888-400-TIPS (8477) or from your cell phone, dial **TIPS.
