Orlando Woman Charged With DUI With Serious Bodily Injury After Crash Critically Injuring 2 Young Children In Frostproof Crash

32-year-old Ashauntie Cox (DOB 2/15/1991) of Orlando, who caused serious bodily harm to two children in her vehicle while fleeing from two crashes and driving under the influence, was arrested in Polk County on Friday, May 19, 2023, and charged with several felonies.

According to witnesses and information developed during the investigation, the first crash occurred around 8:00 p.m. on US Hwy 27 at the intersection with US Hwy 98 near Frostproof. Cox was driving a blue Kia southbound on Hwy 27 when she struck a grey Chevy Silverado pickup truck and then fled at a high rate of speed. As she continued to recklessly speed south down Hwy 27, weaving in and out of slower moving traffic, she rear-ended a 2016 Honda CRV while trying to pass between that SUV and the vehicle next to it which were both also going southbound. The victim driving the CRV was taken to Sebring Hospital, where he was treated and released with minor injuries.

The collision caused Cox’s vehicle to flip several times, ejecting two Orlando children, ages 5 and 8 years old. Both sustained significant injuries, and they were taken to Tampa General Hospital where they are both in critical condition. A 27-year-old female passenger was also seriously injured along her spinal cord, hip, and back. She remains at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center in stable condition.

When deputies arrived at the scene of the crash, they detected the odor of marijuana and located a bottle of tequila in Cox’s vehicle. Cox was transported to the hospital and interview by deputies. Cox told deputies they were driving from Orlando to Avon Park to celebrate the 5-year-old’s kindergarten graduation. She admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day, and to having four shots of tequila. Her blood was drawn for further analysis, and she displayed several signs of impairment.

She was booked into the Polk County Jail and is being charged with:

·        Three counts DUI with serious bodily injury (F3)

·        Two counts negligent child abuse with great bodily harm (F2)

·        Reckless driving (F3)

·        One count DUI with property damage (M1)

·        One count DUI (M2)

Further charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

“This woman had no regard for anyone’s life when she got behind the wheel intoxicated and then drove recklessly down a major highway, but what’s worse is the blatant disregard she had for the lives of the innocent children in her car. I expect a successful prosecution to hold her accountable—and let’s hope she loses her driving privileges if she’s released from jail or prison. Please keep these babies and their families in your prayers.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff

Deadly Collision in Frostproof: Wrong-Way Driver, Another Motorist Killed in Fiery Wreck

0

Around 10:00 p.m. last evening, Thursday, May 8, 2025, a head-on collision occurred in the southbound lane of US Hwy 27 approximately ¼ mile north of the intersection with Bay Street (Sun Ray) in unincorporated Frostproof, resulting in the deaths of both drivers of the two vehicles involved.

According to the evidence at the scene and at least one witness, a 2021 black Toyota Corolla was heading northbound in the left southbound lane of US 27. At the same time, a red Nissan Altima was heading south in the left southbound lane. The two vehicles collided in a head-on crash, and the Toyota immediately caught fire. It was redirected and came to a final rest facing north in the left turn southbound lane. The driver of the Toyota, a 41-year-old Sebring woman, was the only occupant, and she is deceased.

The Nissan rotated clockwise 90 degrees and came to a final rest in the outside lane, facing west. The driver of the Nissan, a 32-year-old Kissimmee man, was ejected from his car, and died at the scene. His passenger, a 31-year-old Kissimmee woman who is believed to be either his spouse or girlfriend (they live at the same address), suffered critical injuries, and had to be extricated from the car and was airlifted as a trauma alert to a local hospital. She remains in critical but stable condition.

A 911 call was received at the same time as the crash occurred, reporting a car traveling the wrong way (north in the southbound lanes) at a high rate of speed on US 27 in that area.

Local Former MLB Player Looks to Give Back; Begins Construction of State-Of-The-Art Baseball Academy

Retired MLB Pitcher Grant Dayton at D-Bat Academy, currently under construction. Photo provided by G. Dayton

Many kids start playing with a bat and ball early in life, and and a number of them aspire to play at an elite level. Between school sports teams and travel clubs, parents can spend countless hours and thousands of dollars giving their children the best training possible.

Within the next year, those same families can have another option to consider; meet Grant Dayton.

The retired Major League Baseball pitcher, who resides in Winter Haven, founded his own love of the sport before he started kindergarten.

“I’ve played ball since I was 4 years old,” Dayton says. “It’s always been a passion of mine. I was lucky enough to get a scholarship to play at Auburn University for 4 years, and go on to get drafted by the Florida Marlins in 2010. After 5 years with them, I got traded to the Dodgers and that’s when I made it to the big leagues, in 2016. I had 2 years with the Dodgers, and 4 more with the Braves, ultimately winning the World Series in 2021. Injuries (eventually) got the best of me, and I made the decision to retire after the 2022 season.

While retirement ended his professional career on the field, Dayton knew that it would not draw the curtain on his love for the sport. The idea of giving back to kids and families with a similar dream than he was a driving force; he just needed to find a way to do it.

“After retirement,” says Dayton, “I thought long and hard about how to give back to the community through baseball. I thought about coaching, doing private lessons, and opening my own facility. I didn’t know where to start, but I knew that I had to do something.”

His research uncovered a franchise called D-BAT, a company with a strong history and dedication to the game. Dayton found it to be a perfect fit.

“I had always known about D-BAT, and through a little bit of research, I realized there was an opportunity in this area to open one. It was a no brainer to dive right in…their pricing is more affordable than most stand alone facilities. I began to realize this area could greatly benefit from a D-BAT.”

Dayton says that there are several facets of the company that will be in line with families securing the best opportunities for kids focused on baseball.

“D-BAT Academies are clean, which in the baseball world is hard to come by,” says Dayton. “Just walk in one and you’ll know what I mean. The caliber of the facility rivals what MLB teams are using. Not to sound spoiled, but it’s what I’m used to: a top-of-the-line, technologically advanced, clean training facility.”

The new D-Bat Academy will be located at 1981 Ernie Caldwell Blvd., next to Posner Park in Davenport. The location alone screams its ties to the sport, as it’s the former location the Kansas City Royals’ Spring Training center, as well as a throwback to the days of “Boardwalk and Baseball”.

The brand-new state-of-the-art facility is currently under construction and will open its doors within a year. Photo provided by G. Dayton

“That area has baseball history, so it’s pretty cool to be able to bring some baseball back to it,” Dayton says.

The facility with occupy a portion of a 150,000 square foot warehouse, which will be located in the same building as Planet Obstacle, a trampoline and obstacle park.

“I think that we will give each other good visibility, and be able to provide a lot of fun for everyone.”

Dayton, along with his wife, Cori, have worked together to make this dream come to life, with a couple of special reasons.

“I’ve got 2 boys who have obviously grown up around baseball,” says Dayton. “D-BAT is just as much for them as it is for me. Cori has been amazing during this process.”

While the facility is currently under development and construction, Dayton plans to be able to open the doors within a year. He’s confident that the pricing, the programs, and the value will be attractive to kids seeking to have fun and train well, as well as to parents. The facility will offer perks like memberships, clinics, camps, lessons and birthday parties. A top-of-the-line pro shop will offer “some of the best equipment in the game.” There will also be ways to earn discounts.

Dayton says he understands how kids can set their sights on plying with a Major League Baseball team one day, and is beyond excited to create a program locally to both develop their skills and hone in on what makes them happy.

“It’s been a dream of mine to find a way to give back to the community and grow the game of baseball. Baseball not only provided for my family, but also gave us memories that we’ll cherish forever. Once I dug into D-BAT’s business model and core values, it was a no brainer to bring it to this area.”

Juneteenth Event Approved and Set to Run June 14

By Capers Gay

An event to celebrate the holiday of Juneteenth was approved by the Lake Wales City Commission at the May 7, 2025 meeting. The holiday, meant to commemorate the abolishment of slavery, will have its own Lake Wales celebration on June 14, 2025.

The event will last from 3pm to 7pm and will require Lincoln Avenue between D Street and B Street to be closed from 10am to 10pm. Alcohol will be served, and the event will feature a DJ, live music, vendors, and food trucks. There is estimated to be no fiscal impact as the event is unbudgeted and paid for by the Juneteenth Lake Wales LLC/Lincoln Community Development Corporation. This same group will fully reimburse the city for the police and public service costs.

The special event permit passed the committee’s consent agenda without any controversy or comment from the public, though a committee member did note that the large amount of items on the consent agenda opened them up to criticisms of rubber-stamping permits.

Alligator Attack Reported at Lake Kissimmee State Park

0

Update:

LAKE KISSIMMEE STATE PARK, FL — A peaceful afternoon canoeing turned into a nightmare Tuesday when a 61-year-old woman was fatally attacked by an alligator near the mouth of Tiger Creek in Lake Kissimmee. The incident occurred around 4 p.m., according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

The woman and her husband were navigating a 14-foot canoe in approximately two feet of water when they inadvertently passed over an alligator. The startled reptile thrashed, causing the canoe to capsize. The woman fell into the water, landing on top of the alligator, which then bit her. Her husband attempted to rescue her but was unsuccessful.

Emergency responders, including the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, marine units, and fire rescue, were dispatched to the scene. The woman’s body was later recovered. A contracted nuisance alligator trapper has been called in to locate and remove the animal involved.

At this time two alligators of approximately 10ft or more have been killed by Nuisance Alligator hunters brought in to find the alligator that killed the woman.

This tragic event marks the second alligator attack in the area within two months. In March, a woman kayaking near the canal connecting Lake Kissimmee and Tiger Lake was severely injured by an 8-foot-4-inch alligator. The reptile was subsequently captured and euthanized.

Lake Kissimmee is known for having the highest concentration of alligators in Florida. Warning signs are posted throughout the park, advising visitors to exercise caution. The FWC emphasizes that while alligator attacks are rare, they can occur, particularly during mating season, which runs from April to September.

Gatorland CEO Mark McHugh advises the public to respect wildlife and adhere to safety guidelines. “Coexisting with alligators in the state of Florida means respecting their presence and abiding by all precautionary measures to avoid conflict,” McHugh stated.

The FWC urges anyone who encounters a potentially dangerous alligator to contact their toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).

Daily Ridge Staff Report

May 6, 2025

Lake Kissimmee State Park – Emergency crews responded to a harrowing alligator attack Tuesday afternoon after two kayakers encountered the alligator while on Lake Kissimmee. One of the individuals was injured in the incident, but it is unclear if officials have been able reach them.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), their agency received a call at approximately 4:05 p.m. to assist the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at the park. PCSO deployed deputies, a helicopter, and members of its Marine Unit to support the response effort.

The alligator attacked one of the kayakers while the pair was out on the lake. Specific details about the nature of the victim’s injuries or their current condition have not been released. The lake, which spans both Polk and Osceola counties, may have also prompted a response from Osceola County authorities.

The Daily Ridge has reached out to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for more information.

A spokesperson with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed:

“In response to your inquiries, our agency received a call at 4:05 p.m. this afternoon to assist the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at Lake Kissimmee State Park regarding an alligator attack. Two people were kayaking, and one was attacked by an alligator on the lake (Lake Kissimmee). I believe Osceola County also received a call — this lake is between both counties.”

As of this report, it is unclear whether the victim has been located or if public access to the lake is being restricted. Visitors to Lake Kissimmee State Park are urged to exercise caution and adhere to all posted wildlife warnings.

This is a developing story. The Daily Ridge will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
