Orlando Woman Charged With DUI With Serious Bodily Injury After Crash Critically Injuring 2 Young Children In Frostproof Crash

32-year-old Ashauntie Cox (DOB 2/15/1991) of Orlando, who caused serious bodily harm to two children in her vehicle while fleeing from two crashes and driving under the influence, was arrested in Polk County on Friday, May 19, 2023, and charged with several felonies.

According to witnesses and information developed during the investigation, the first crash occurred around 8:00 p.m. on US Hwy 27 at the intersection with US Hwy 98 near Frostproof. Cox was driving a blue Kia southbound on Hwy 27 when she struck a grey Chevy Silverado pickup truck and then fled at a high rate of speed. As she continued to recklessly speed south down Hwy 27, weaving in and out of slower moving traffic, she rear-ended a 2016 Honda CRV while trying to pass between that SUV and the vehicle next to it which were both also going southbound. The victim driving the CRV was taken to Sebring Hospital, where he was treated and released with minor injuries.

The collision caused Cox’s vehicle to flip several times, ejecting two Orlando children, ages 5 and 8 years old. Both sustained significant injuries, and they were taken to Tampa General Hospital where they are both in critical condition. A 27-year-old female passenger was also seriously injured along her spinal cord, hip, and back. She remains at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center in stable condition.

When deputies arrived at the scene of the crash, they detected the odor of marijuana and located a bottle of tequila in Cox’s vehicle. Cox was transported to the hospital and interview by deputies. Cox told deputies they were driving from Orlando to Avon Park to celebrate the 5-year-old’s kindergarten graduation. She admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day, and to having four shots of tequila. Her blood was drawn for further analysis, and she displayed several signs of impairment.

She was booked into the Polk County Jail and is being charged with:

·        Three counts DUI with serious bodily injury (F3)

·        Two counts negligent child abuse with great bodily harm (F2)

·        Reckless driving (F3)

·        One count DUI with property damage (M1)

·        One count DUI (M2)

Further charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

“This woman had no regard for anyone’s life when she got behind the wheel intoxicated and then drove recklessly down a major highway, but what’s worse is the blatant disregard she had for the lives of the innocent children in her car. I expect a successful prosecution to hold her accountable—and let’s hope she loses her driving privileges if she’s released from jail or prison. Please keep these babies and their families in your prayers.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff

The Reason Memorial Day Means Way More Than A Long Weekend

In honor of Memorial Day, Lake Wales Daily was graciously permitted to publish the following transcription of a speech given by Lake Wales resident and Vietnam Army Veteran, Charles L. Skipper, to his Lake Wales High School class of 1965, in 2008:

Lake Wales resident, Charles L. Skipper, with his wife, Kat Gates- Skipper, with permission

This is the day that our nation has set aside to honor and pay tribute to those who have answered the country’s call, especially to those who have paid the ultimate price for their service.

That we are a nation who believes in peace and freedom, America was born in battle. And throughout our brief existence, we have called on our soldiers to fight more than any other country in modern history.

The American soldier has been called by many names: a patriot, a Yankee, a rebel, a Dough Boy, a “G.I.”, and many others. Even though he answers to all of these names, he is basically just: a farmer, a doctor, a lawyer, a factory worker, a mechanic, a boyfriend, a son, a father, a husband, the boy-next-door… He is you and me.

Our soldiers will put their lives on hold and travel to strange lands and help people they don’t know so that they can live in freedom, and without oppression, the same as we do. The American soldier is a fierce and relentless fighter. He is brave, determined, and he never quits, and never backs down. And above all, he is a kind, caring, and unselfish individual. He will turn around and share his food, shelter, and all he has with his enemy. Though he may not care for it, or like the people he fights for, he does his job, and then comes home, knowing he has made a difference in the world.

My experience of being a soldier came in a far away place called Vietnam. I was a young kid as most of us were. I did what I thought was right; I served my country. I fought and saw many friends die and even left my own blood on foreign soil and I came home to a cold shoulder and ridicule for what I had done.

The Vietnam soldier was the only soldier in US history who came home and was NOT hailed as a hero. I, myself, like most everyone else who were there, held our distain and bitterness inside and did our best to blend back into a society that we knew had no idea or could ever understand what we had seen or been through. But life goes on!

For me, this year marks 40 years since I was in Vietnam. The year I spent there is the most traumatic time of my life. I still have lasting and haunting memories of my time there. I remember the place we were, the things I have experienced and seen, and the people I knew there. They say that time changes and heals all things. I don’t know if this is true, but I DO know that war changes lives. But for those who have gone away and tasted the blood, they are not the same when they come home. People have often asked me through the years what it was like to be in a war. The best answer I can give is I came in the country a 21-year-old scared boy and left a 21-year-old tired man.

As the years have come and gone, our lives have changed. We find new commitments through our jobs, we get married (some of us more than others), raise a family, find new friends and scatter all over the world. But, the best thing that anyone can ever do is NOT forget the past. Especially the people that have touched their lives. There is nothing greater than renewing a bond of friendship with someone that you haven’t seen for a long time.

In 2006, I had such an experience. My wife and I traveled to Washington DC and I visited the Vietnam Wall for the first time. I met friends there that I hadn’t seen in 38 years. I told her that It isn’t bad that I know somebody’s name on the wall. I think we all do. What is sad is that I know SO MANY names on the wall. what most people don’t know about the wall is that not only are the names of those who lost their lives there, but the names of the known POWs and MIAs are on there too. The POW and MIA names have a cross beside them. When one of them is found, a circle is put around the cross. This signifies that they have come full circle; their journey is complete. They have come home! For me, there are four names that bear the cross: Fred Kruppa, Huiba Guillary, David Scott and Daniel Kelly. These were friends of mine. One was my platoon leader, and three were in my squad. On April 25, 1968, while in the A Shau Valley, on a road which winds around the side of a mountain, our platoon walked into an ambush, and these four troopers fell. Although repeated attempts were made to retrieve them, we eventually had to pull out into this day. They are still there waiting to come home. For myself, and those in my company, we have carried this burden for 40 years, and the wound is deep and bleeds constantly, and the only way the wound will finally heal, is when a circle is placed around their crosses.

Every soldier has a story to tell. This is a very brief part of mine. I am proud to be an American; I am proud to serve my country, and I am proud and salute those who also served. Upon leaving the wall, I had gained a new respect for those who were there.

Memorial Day Proclamation from Gov. DeSantis Requests Respect in Honoring Fallen Heroes

Memorial Day Proclamation set by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

The following is an excerpt of a letter written to the citizens of Florida by James S. Hartsell, Executive Director, Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs:

We observe Memorial Day on Monday. All Floridians will have the opportunity to honor the selfless service and sacrifice of those who preceded us so that we may retain the freedoms we cherish today. As you see the flag at half-staff on Monday morning, remember that freedom is not free. Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed the annual Memorial Day in Florida proclamation, which you’ll find later in this edition.

As part of Memorial Day, FDVA is the proud co-sponsor of the 2025 PBS special, “National Memorial Day Concert,” which ‎airs live in all nine Florida Public Broadcasting markets on the ‎evening of May 25. We’ll honor our more than 423,000 Vietnam Veterans in Florida with the airing of our public service announcement prior to the opening titles. Join us beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern.

Several Veteran-related bills have cleared the legislature and will be sent in the coming days and weeks to the Governor’s office for consideration. The proposed budget for our agency is also making its way through the legislative process, and I’m confident our agency’s budget will be voted on favorably. You can find the status of Veteran-related legislation in the current session by visiting our website at https://floridavets.org and clicking on ‎‎“Veteran Legislation.”‎ We’ll have more to report in next month’s edition.

Juneteenth Events Coming to Lake Wales

By Capers Gay

Several events celebrating Juneteenth are coming to Lake Wales. The June 19th holiday is meant to commemorate the abolishing of slavery and will have a couple events around the same time.

The first is Freedom Fest. Organized by the Juneteenth Lake Wales LLC, Freedom Fest is designed to not only educate people, but also bring them together. The organization’s president, Sara Jones explained, “Engaging as a community helps us see our similarities and reminds us that our neighbors can also be our friends. We also want people to learn about the history of the United States because those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it! This event is open to ALL people, as we all share this community, its history, and its future.”

Freedom Fest is a multi-day affair. It begins on June 13th from 6pm to 10pm at the Turner Center with a Jazz and R&B concert for attendants with food and drinks available.

The June 14th date stretches from 3pm to 7pm and takes place on Lincoln Avenue. Alcohol will be served, and the event will feature a DJ, live music, vendors, and food trucks. Beyond its educational goals, Freedom Fest aims to generate enough money to repeat itself annually. Whatever is left will be used to provide scholarships for deserving high school seniors; this particular goal, Jones notes, is a plan locked to the future. “The biggest challenges in putting on an event like Freedom Fest are always funding and volunteers. We have been blessed with a few generous sponsors, but we can always use more financial support.” Jones says.

Another event is the 8th annual Juneteenth Luncheon and AgriFestival being held on June 19th from 11am to 6pm at the James P. Austin Community Center. The event will include a number of guests including former mayor Eugene Fultz, Commissioner Daniel Williams, Mayor Jack Hilligoss, and Dr. Alzo Reddick. Reddick was the first African-American from Orlando to be elected to the Florida Legislature, and holds the honor of being the first black male to pass two amendments to the state’s Constitution. One of these amendments being the Juneteenth Amendment, which recognized the holiday as a day of observance. Reddick will be the speaker for the event.

The menu will consist largely of red foods to symbolize resilience and ancestral West African traditions. Beyond grilled barbecue chicken, red drinks, velvet cake, and tea cakes will make this connection known to attendees.

May is National Historic Preservation Month

Grand Opening of Dunkin’ Donuts: A Community Celebration

This morning on Hwy 60 in Lake Wales, Florida, the community came together to celebrate the grand opening of the new Dunkin’ Donuts at 180 Highway 60 E. The event, marked by a festive atmosphere, showcased the warm spirit of the town and the excitement surrounding this new addition to the local dining scene.

The Lake Wales Highlander Band set the tone with lively performances, filling the air with music and energy. The mayor joined the festivities, welcoming the new business and highlighting its importance to the community. Local business owner Al Mustafa, who operates multiple Dunkin’ locations in the Polk County area, was at the heart of the event, personally greeting patrons and engaging with guests, making everyone feel at home.

The grand opening featured exciting raffles and giveaways, ensuring that every attendee had a chance to walk away with a special prize, adding to the celebratory mood. With the Florida sun shining brightly, many opted for Dunkin’s refreshing iced coffee drinks to cool off, while others indulged in the chain’s signature freshly baked donuts, available in a variety of flavors like Glazed, Boston Kreme, and Strawberry Frosted.

This new 24/7 Dunkin’ location, which had a soft opening prior to the event, promises to be a go-to spot for breakfast and snacking needs in Lake Wales. The grand opening was a testament to the strong community support and the warm welcome extended to Al Mustafa and his team.
