Grow Your Own: What To Plant in September

Date:

Believe it or not, fall is just around the corner. It’s time to start thinking about what to plant in September.

Many of these plants can be grown in large pots if you don’t have the garden space to plant in rows. This also helps to keep the weeds at bay. Even if you only plant a few seeds, your yield should be many times over what you plant.

As we are in a central zone, these are the plants you can start now.

Things to consider: waiting until later in September to plant lettuce and arugula is wise, as the temperature is still elevated.

If planting tomatoes, considered varieties of cherry tomato versus larger ones. Smaller tomatoes tend to produce fruit with fewer blemishes or fungus issues. you can start them from seed now and transplant them later.

Sugarcane grows remarkably well; there are a number of varieties available. Stock should be cut in pieces and laid horizontally to the ground. They will sprout from buds in the midsection of each piece.
