Polk County Sheriff’s Office Press Release
The PCSO Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a crash involving a motorcycle that resulted in the death of the motorcyclist. The crash occurred at approximately 2:57 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, on Waverly Road and Hodge Street in Waverly.

According to evidence and witness statements, a 2015 Toyota Highlander was traveling east bound on Waverly Road. At the same time, a motorcycle, being driven by 35 year-old David Durham, was traveling west bound on Waverly Road at what appears to be a speed above the posted 35 mph speed limit. The Highlander began making a left turn onto Hodge Street when she crossed into Durham’s path.
Upon impact, Durham was ejected from the motorcycle and came to a final rest along the north shoulder of Waverly Road approximately 75 feet west of the point of impact. He was not wearing a helmet. The Highlander rotated counter clockwise and was redirected northwest approximately 15-20 feet. All occupants in the vehicle were seat belted.
Upon arrival of first responders, Durham was found unresponsive with a bystander preforming CPR. He was transported to a local hospital by ambulance where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver and two passengers of the Highlander suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital where they were expected to be treated and released the same day.
