UPDATED 1:35 pm JULY 17: FHP Closed Down S.R.60 At East of Lake Wales Due To Very Bad Crash

An email received today from the Florida Highway Patrol Public Affairs Office offers an update on the fatal crash on SR 60 yesterday, July 16:

“Vehicle 1, a Chevy Silverado, was traveling westbound on SR-60 near the Lake Kissimmee South boat ramp. Vehicle 2, a Honda CRV, was traveling eastbound on SR-60. Vehicle 3, a Lexus ES, was traveling eastbound directly behind Vehicle 2. For unknown reason, Driver 1 failed to maintain control Vehicle 1. Vehicle 1 crossed the centerline and collided nearly head on with Vehicle 2. Upon impact, Vehicle 2 rotated and again collided with Vehicle 1. Despite evasive maneuvers, Vehicle 3 then collided with Vehicle 2 before striking a guard rail, located along the outside shoulder of the roadway. A passenger traveling in Vehicle 2 suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash while the driver, transported to an area hospital, later expired from injuries suffered during the collision.

Passenger in V1: Female, 1/23/88, Fort Lauderdale, minor injury

Passenger in V1: Female, 3/14/47, Fort Lauderdale, serious injury

Driver 2: Male, 3/19/56, Madison, WI, fatal injury

Passenger in V2: Female, 8/19/58, Madison, WI, fatal injury

Passenger in V2: Female, 10/4/39, Largo, serious injury

Driver 3: Female, 3/15/05, Port St. Lucie, minor injury

It should be noted that the Florida Highway Patrol does not release the names of victims due to Marsy’s law.


The Florida Hwy Patrol has shut down State Road 60 at River Ranch Blvd. According to the FHP the accident occurred at approximately 1:02pm.

The crash involves three or more vehicles. One is a white pickup truck and two look like sedan type vehicles.

The accident is being reported as a fatality. The Lake Wales Daily has reached out to Sergeant Gaskin’s with FHP for further details.

Expect long delays before the roadway is open.

Current maps are rerouting traffic through Sebring.
